Why do people watch documentaries? What pleasures are available to the viewers?

Using Blumler&Katz’s theory of Uses & Gratifications, people should watch any kind of programmes to be entertained, to be informed, to socially interact with others, to identify with characters or to escape from the daily trouble. Then it could be said that people watch documentaries mostly to be informed, but sometimes also to be entertained and to socially interact with others. People could also watch them to escape from the daily trouble – but usually for that purpose they watch other kind of programmes more entertaining. Of course when you watch a documentary you would be concentrate only to that, and your pleasure would be not think about your problems. Also usually they give you a lot of informations, to keep for yourself or to share with others. For example, last week I watched “Born into the Wild” to interact with my friends. The story of a hedgehog shocked us that much that there was a lot to talk about.

Film genre (Romance/Comedy).

For the genre romance and comedy I chose “Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging”, “High School Musical”, and “LOL”. I remember I watched those the first time to be entertained and to escape from the boredom, using them to make me laugh. I watched again those many times more for the same reason – because they had this easy, funny and kind of stupid plots which could be followed even being tired.
“Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging” starts with the new year of school of Georgia, in which she will be the “New Georgia”. At school two new boys arrive – and Georgia and her best friend, Jas, want to be their girlfriend. The story is all about how Georgia tries to realize her wish.
LOL also starts with the beginning of the new school year, with Lola who dumps her boyfriend because he had betrayed her. The plot is about how her year will carry on, also with her falling in love with his best friend, Kyle – an event which will cause a lot of problems.
HSM doesn’t start with the beginning of the school year, but of the new term, after a small scene during the New Year’s Eve, where Gabriella and Troy met. Gabriella will be the new arrival at school in that term. The story is about how their own world mix up to make only one, as they will be united to be a couple.
Those three films have a lot of points in common, mostly because they have the same genre. They are about love and make you laugh even if High School Musical is a musical too – as the title suggest. They are all settled mostly in a high school, and then in other random places of daily life – probably to make easier for people to identify with the characters. They all have a “
guy”, a “girl”, one or more best friends of the girl or of the boy, and “another girl”, which usually is a bad one with whom the boy get along with at first. In those three films it happens that the “bad girl” is a bit stupid and blond (I suppose due to stereotypes). None of them has great special effects, except for slow-motion or fast-motion (and not in all three).
Todorov’s theory can be applied on all of them, and summarized in only one. There’s the equilibrium at the start, then one of the protagonists (Georgia, Lola, or Troy) makes an awful mistake and mess everything up, then he/she recognize his/her mistake, and tries to fix it – but end up in doing something more wrong. At the end he/she manages to fix it and the equilibrium returns.
It can be noticed how the protagonists develop during the film, learning from their own errors. Using Levi-Strauss’s theory, it can be said for example that Georgia at the beginning of the film is in opposition with her at the end, as she was with her “enemy”.
